The highly specialized vessel that will create a uniform layer for the tunnel to lay on in Fehmarnbelt is now ready to embark on its mission.
When the 89 concrete elements of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link are lowered to their destination on the bottom of the sea, they will be placed gently on a bed of gravel.
One of the key vessels in the task of achieving a completely uniform layer of gravel for the elements to rest on is soon ready to go to work. The Multi Purpose Pontoon was built especially for the Femern Project at the Crist shipyard in Gdynia, Poland, and was delivered to the Joint Venture Femern Link Contractors for Femern A/S at a ceremony on Monday.
With her ability to neatly arrange the layers of gravel with centimetre precision even at great depths, the Multi Purpose Pontoon is a gentle giant with a length of 130 meters, a width of 45 meters and 17 577 gross tonnages.
She can carry 19 crew members, which is enough for two work shifts. She is equipped with two large tanks with a capacity of up to 7.000 tons of gravel each.
The CRIST S.A. shipyard is also in the process of building the two floating pontoons that are going to transport the 89 tunnel elements from the floating dock in Rødbyhavn to their destination.
